What was the San Diego Wide Awake Improvement Club?
I was reading a Wikipedia article on Charles Hatfield: http://en. wikipedia. org / wiki / Charles_HatfieldÉl was a rainmaker, “” hired by the city of San Diego to produce enough rain to fill a tank. The San Diego Historical Society has a website at: http://www. sandiegohistory. org / bio / Hatfield / Hatfield. htm What he said: “Realtor Fred A. Binney, a full member of the San Diego awake Improvement Club, sent a letter to council. With the support of some members of his club, offered the following suggestions: Morena Dam reservoir is full and only one third of the city based on growth by an abundant supply of water. We believe that the Council should consider hiring of Charles Hatfield in the rain. “All the pages I read on the web about Hatfield San Diego Wide Awake Club of improvement, but I could not find any reference to what was, who created it, or what was their purpose . Does anyone have information?

So little even from the Historical Society.
“San Diego Union, October 9, 1909, 5:3. Members of Wide Awake Improvement Club support Exposition; article in Los Angeles Times, October 3, 1909, states San Diego is entitled to this support.”
“Those who had supported the exposition had not lost confidence that it had advertised the beauty, climate and possibilities of San Diego to an extent that in time the city was bound to experience new growth and prosperity. Marston told the Wide Awake Improvement Club that:
What we need most of all is harmony…we stand at present on the threshold of the greatest prosperity San Diego ever dreamed–unless we have war–and to take full advantage of it we all must have a properly qualified man for the office of mayor. What have so-called smokestacks to do with the qualifications for mayor?”
