Information Technology has a special branch for Environmental Science called GIS (Geographic Information System). Right now we use GIS extensively in the websites like http://www.mapquest.com and http://www.maps.google.com to identify the location. But using GIS softwares like ARCINFO, ARCVIEW etc. you can digitize the geographic information in to the map like temperature of ceertain river, soil composition of certain area, vegetation and deforestation land and many more themes you can include in it.
